Dhikr in the evening and morning: "We're pleased with Allah as our Lord, Islam as our Deen, and Muhammad as Our Messenger"


Abu Dawud in his Sunan records the following hadith from Abu Sa’id Al-Khudri (radhiya Allahu ‘anhu) who said that the Messenger of Allah (SWT) (‘alayhis salaam) said,
“Whoever says:
رَضِيتُ بِاللَّهِ رَبًّا وَبِالْإِسْلَامِ دِينًا ‏ ‏وَبِمُحَمَّدٍ ‏ ‏رَسُولًا
Radeetu billahi rabban, wa bil-Islaami deenan, wa bi-Muhammadin rasoolan 
“I am pleased with Allah (SWT) as my Lord, with Islam as my Deen, and Muhammad as a Messenger” 
Jannah becomes obligatory for him [to enter].
Imam At-Tirmidhi records from Thawbaan (radhiya Allahu ‘anhu) that the Nabi (SAWS)Muhammad (‘alayhis salaam) said, “Whoever says at evening time,
رَضِيتُ بِاللَّهِ رَبًّا وَبِالْإِسْلَامِ دِينًا ‏ ‏وَبِمُحَمَّدٍ ‏ ‏نَبِيًّا
“I am pleased with Allah (SWT) as my Lord, with Islam as our Deen, and Muhammad as our Prophet” 
in effect Allah (SWT) will become pleased with them.” (3389 book of Du’aa’)
In the Musannaf of Ibn Abi Shaybah, At-Tabarani’s Mu’jam, Imam Ahmad’s Musnad the words, “Whoever says in the morning time or the evening time…” Al-Haythami stated, “And the narrators of Imam Ahmad and Tabarani are impeccably trustworthy (thiqaat).” Ibn Abdul-Barr states in his “Al-Isti’aab”, “This hadith is Sahih.”
Two words are mentioned within these different narrations: Rasulan رسولاً and Nabiyan نبياً . Imam An-Nawawi stated about the usage of these two words in the dhikr, “And it is recommended to combine the two [wordings], so it is said, “Nabiyan wa Rasoolan (Prophet and Messenger)”, and if one were to shorten [the dhikr] to only one of the words then they would only be acting upon one of the narrations.”1
It is the Sunnah of the last of the Prophets (‘alayhim salaam) to repeat these words in the morning and in the evening. It is a testament of faith, a reminder for the soul, and a litany of spiritual strength. Such a short phrase yet resulting in incredible rewards; the pleasure of Allah (SWT) and thus His blessing upon one to enter the eternal garden, bliss – Jannah.
